The boom of a container crane collapsed onto a ship during boom down operations
Last Friday (18 January) at around 16.35h local time the boom of a crane at Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) collapsed onto the ship, Hapag-Lloyd’s 8749 TEU Kyoto Express. The incident occurred during boom down operations, so neither the crane operator nor anyone else was injured.
Shipside operations were immediately suspended and SCT’s MD Campbell Mason issued a statement saying that they would remain closed until independent inspections have been carried out on all SCT’s other gantry cranes to ensure that they are in a safe condition to operate. The inspections commenced on Sunday morning (20 January) and the cranes will be phased back into service as the inspections are completed. Landside operations continue to operate normally.
At the time of writing, the age and make of the crane that collapsed is not known to WorldCargo News. This is the second recent incident known to us involving boom collapse during boom operations, the other one having occurred in Kwangyang last October with a practically new, superpost-Panamax crane of a make unknown in Europe (WorldCargo News, November 2007, p60).
The last time a crane collapsed at SCT was about 12 years ago, but that was due to it being hit by the bow of of a ship
